Class Rules

  1. Rules- Established guidelines for one's conduct. All Marion County School rules are in effect in my class. These class rules may be in addition to those rules outlined in your student code of conduct handbook. Please understand that I enforce school and county rules whether in my classroom, on the campus, or in the cafeteria. I do not condone misbehavior and I will not overlook poor behavior. Govern yourself and manage your self respect. "Poor behavior is the sure hallmark of a weak mind." - Plato
  2. Respect- is a two way street. We determined as a class that you have to give respect to get respect. We clarified what respect is. From my side; Respect is listening when I am talking or when another classmate is talking, or when you are attempting something new, that you do not give up or use I can't, I don't know, I won't, or I'll try. From your viewpoints, respect is not losing my temper when you do not understand something. There were many other points as well, but we all agreed respect is important. The class will be silent during the announcements, or when the intercom is activated. This includes when another teacher or adult is in the room. Please wait quietly for me to finish. Please listen as your classmates are speaking and we will listen when you are speaking. Ask for help, don't ask for answers.
  3. Prepared for Class- is a measure of your self respect and your gauge for success. You are to arrive in class each day prepared to work and learn. Be advised, it is your responsibility to come to class prepared and equipped for work. i.e planner, notebook, writing tool, paper, proper dress and attitude.
  4. Assigned Seating- is a rule for me to follow and a measure of my organization. There will be a seating chart that is a continual work in progress. I reserve the right to move your seat if I think I need to make a change to improve the educational setting of the class. If you are out of your assigned seat, you will automatically be marked tardy even if you move to your correct seat.
  5. Horseplay- is dangerous in classrooms and labs. Horseplay is defined as the picking at, or throwing objects at another student or touching another person or their belongings' without permission. I will not tolerate such activity and will immediately go to my disciplinary code. Observe the 6" rule. Stay 6 inches from your neighbor.
  6. Contraband- is defined as cellphones, MP3 players, cameras and other electronic devices, food, candy, drinks, notes to other students (which I read) or cosmetics. Please do not put on cosmetics in class or engage in preening. If I see contraband, it will be confiscated.
  7. Sleeping in Class- is what you do at home when it is dark. You may not have your head down or be sleeping in any position. You will be given an opportunity to work. You have the opportunity to make positive choices about work that will help you be successful or not; choose wisely.
  8. "Foul Language- is the hallmark of a weak intellect that cannot rely on wit."- Shakespeare. Please do not use foul or abusive language or racial/ ethnic terms in my class. I do not tolerate bullying, or harassment of others.
  9. Bullying- is the first sign of a coward. Respect the universe and everything in it. Our class is a safe place where people can speak their mind, (on appropriate issues), without fear of reprisal directed against them due to their dress, beliefs, race, gender orientation, or other personal ideas. DO NOT ATTACK ANYONE IN THIS CLASS! We debate ideas not personalities.
  10. Spelling- is counted on EVERY document in class. Use a word processor, dictionary, or other method to learn the rules of spelling. I will mark off on papers for computer slang: LOL,:, ROFLMAO,", Lazy short cuts: b4, cuz, sup, or texting: l8tr, posctn.
  11. I can't, I don't know, I won't, I'll try- are phrases of a quitter. Do not use them in my presence. Use positive phrases to set a positive mindset. I can, I do, I will, I did.
  12. Noise Level- is determined by you. Please observe the stop light in class. A green light means the noise level is fine, yellow flashing light means you need to be cautious, red light and siren means it is too loud. If you can monitor yourselves, then I will not have to use other disciplines. When I hold my hand above my head and say, "Gimme 5, I will count down from 5 to 1 and then you should be silent. I use this procedure in class, and in other situations where I need your attention. When we are in a group of other classes, I need you to look at me for guidance. Do not think that because others are acting out, you may do the same.
